Federal workforce crackdown... Prove Your Worth or Resign

A simple email has federal employees on edge!

Dear Reader,

A single email has thrown the entire federal workforce into turmoil. Over the weekend, government employees received a message with a clear and blunt directive: list your accomplishments from last week or resign.

The email, sent under the subject line “What did you do last week?”, came shortly after Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), posted a warning on X. Musk’s post stated that workers should expect an email asking them to outline their contributions, and that a failure to respond would be treated as a resignation.

The White House confirmed that this was part of the Trump administration’s push to streamline the federal government, eliminating inefficiencies and rewarding productivity. But the move has sparked outrage from unions, legal experts, and federal employees who argue it’s a thinly veiled mass layoff.

A Familiar Tactic with High Stakes

This aggressive approach mirrors Musk’s past management style, notably when he took over Twitter (now X) in 2022. He slashed staff, forced employees to commit to an “extremely hardcore” work ethic, and fired thousands who didn’t comply. Now, he’s applying the same tactics to government agencies, and the results are just as polarizing.

• Supporters say this is a necessary move to cut waste in bloated agencies and reward workers who are truly contributing.

• Critics argue it’s an attack on job security, forcing out employees without due process.

The American Federation of Government Employees, the largest union for federal workers, called the email “cruel and disrespectful”, vowing to fight any wrongful terminations in court.

Musk’s Growing Influence Over Washington.

The fact that Musk, a private citizen, is directing policy within the federal government has raised serious questions. Critics say DOGE operates outside the normal system of checks and balances, wielding power without congressional oversight.

Already, thousands of employees at the IRS, Pentagon, and FAA have been laid off. And Trump has made it clear he supports Musk’s aggressive government, slashing agenda, even encouraging him to “get more aggressive” in his approach.

At a speech during the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), Trump applauded Musk’s efforts, saying:

“We’re removing all of the unnecessary, incompetent, and corrupt bureaucrats from the federal workforce.”

He added that the goal is to shrink the government, reward the best employees, and eliminate waste.

What Happens Next?

Musk has already claimed a large number of responses to the email saying those who answered quickly should be considered for promotions. However, some agencies are pushing back:

• The FBI instructed employees NOT to respond, stating that reviews would be handled internally.

• Unions are preparing legal challenges, arguing that firings based on a single email are illegal.

• Government workers are bracing for more cuts, as DOGE continues to reshape Washington.

For now, the uncertainty remains. Will this move lead to a leaner, more efficient government, or is it a reckless purge of critical workers?

One thing is certain, Musk’s influence in Washington is growing.
